
Just one look at Celeste Young’s Bobbling Along Aran Tote will tempt you to pick up your hook and yarn to have a go at this (after you finish updating yourself on the happenings at the ‘ville of course!). Don’t let the idea of bobbles indimidate you if you’re a beginner crocheter. With a little patience, this pattern is completely within your reach!

Materials:
Approx. 18 oz (1,100 yds) worsted weight yarn (model shown in Caron One Pound Yarn #581, Espresso
(2) 12” x 3” pieces of plastic canvas
Size H/8 hook
Button, approx. 7/8”
Gauge:
14 sts, 16 rows = 4” with H/8 hook
Finished size (excluding strap): 13” x 11” x 4”
Abbreviations:
Double FPDC: (yo, draw up a loop around intended stitch, yo and draw through two loops on hook) twice, yo and draw through three loops on hook.
Bobble: (yo, draw up a loop in intended stitch) four times, yo and draw through nine loops on hook.
Popcorn: work 4 dc in designated stitch, drop hook from loop and insert into top of first dc, insert into dropped loop, yo and pull through to close popcorn.

Front of tote:
Row 1: Ch 42, turn. Working into ridge side of chain, sc in second ridge from hook and in each ridge across (41 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc, FPDC around next sc, (**sc in next three sc, double FPDC around next sc, sc in next sc, double FPDC around next sc, sc in next 3 sc, FPDC around next sc,** sc in next three sc, FPDC around next sc) twice, rep ** to ** once, sc in last sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first 12 sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next 11 sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, sc in last 12 sc.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc, FPDC around FPDC, (**sc in next two sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next 3 sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next two sc, FPDC around FPDC,** sc in next 3 sc, FPDC around FPDC) twice, rep ** to ** once, sc in last sc.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first 13 sc, (bobble in next sc, sc in next 13 sc) twice.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc, FPDC around FPDC, (**sc in next sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next 2 sc, popcorn in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next sc, FPDC around FPDC,** sc in next 3 sc, FPDC around FPDC) twice, rep ** to ** once, sc in last sc.
Row 7: Rep row 3.
Row 8: Rep row 4.
Row 9: Rep row 5.

Rows 11-37: Rep rows 3-10 (four and a half diamond repeats completed)
Row 38: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc, **FPDC around FPDC, sc in next sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next 2 sc, popcorn in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next sc, FPDC around FPDC,** sc in next sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next 5 sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next sc, rep ** to ** once, sc in last sc.
Rows 39-42: Rep rows 7-10,
Rows 43-50: Rep rows 3-10, do not finish off. Evenly sc 42 stitches down left side of tote, finish off and weave in ends. Attach yarn to bottom right side and evenly sc 42 stitches up to top right corner, finish off and weave in ends (six diamond repeats completed).

Back and flap of tote:
Row 1: Ch 42, turn. Working into ridge side of chain, sc in second ridge from hook and in each ridge across (41 sc).

Rows 80-82: Rep rows 8-10.
Row 83: Sc in each sc across, fasten off (ten diamond repeats completed).
With right side facing, join yarn to bottom right side of back/flap piece. Evenly sc 42 stitches up side to top of sixth diamond repeat, fasten off. Repeat directly across on opposite side.
Strap:
**this portion of the pattern may be adjusted to create a strap as long or short as you wish, but should be finished on an evenly numbered row.
Row 1: Ch 12, turn. Sc in second bump from hook and in ea bump across (11 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. (Sc in first sc, FPDC around next sc) twice, sc in next 3 sc, (FPDC around next sc, sc in next sc) twice.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. (Sc in first sc, sc in FPDC) twice, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, (sc in FPDC, sc in next sc) twice.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn. (Sc in first sc, FPDC around next FPDC) twice, sc in next 3 sts, (FPDC around next FPDC, sc in next sc) twice.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn. (Sc in first sc, sc in FPDC) twice, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, (sc in FPDC, sc in next sc) twice.
Row 6: Rep row 4.
Rows 7- 236: Rep rows 3-6, fasten off.
With right side facing, join yarn to bottom right side of strap piece. Evenly sc 42 stitches up side to top of twenty-fifth bobble row, fasten off. Repeat directly across on opposite side and on both sides at opposite end.
Base (make 2):
Row 1: Ch 12, turn. Sc in second ch from hook and in ea st across (11 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in ea sc across (11 sc).
Rows 3-42: Rep row 2, finish off.
Joining of base pieces: Holding the two base pieces tightly together and working into back loop of front piece edging and front loop of back piece edging, join yarn at right corner of short side. Sl st in first 11 sc, sl st in next 42 sc, sl st in next 11 sc, do not finish off. Trim both pieces of plastic canvas to fit and insert into open side, one piece on top of the other for added support. Sl st in next 42 sc to close base, sl st in first sl st, finish off.
Assembly:
With wrong sides of tote front and base together and working into back loop of base edging and front loop of tote front ch, join yarn at right corner. Sl st in ea st across to opposite corner (42 sts), do not finish off. With wrong sides of strap end and base together and working into back loop of base edging and front loop of strap ch, continue to sl st to opposite corner of strap (11 sc), do not finish off. Continue in this way around, being careful not to twist strap. Join with sl st to beginning sl st, fasten off. Base should be completely attached to tote.
Holding wrong sides of tote piece and strap together and working into back loop of tote edging and front loop of strap edging, join yarn at base and sl st up 42 sts in each corner. Fasten off each corner and tightly weave in ends, ensuring that pieces are well attached.
It is recommended to line the tote to prevent stretching. . . and to make the inside look pretty!
